Studying medicine in the Caribbean is not only an increasing alternative for American students wishing to study medicine in competitive programs at half the cost in the states; but also the warm climate and lively culture of the Caribbean islands are something that is worth the experience.

There are about 60 schools in nations of the Caribbean Sea offering medical studies programs in English. These programs are also aimed at international students as well as the local ones. A student can choose to study medicine either in the European Union or at a University in any of the Caribbean nations.

There are some factors which have to be taken into account before embarking to study in the Caribbean. They are as under:

1. Consider the cost of the program

Despite the fact that Caribbean University medical programs are affordable than mainstream American ones, medical schools in the Caribbean are quite expensive in comparison to their European counterparts.

Some have tuition fees that can go up to USD$ 30,000 a year because a large number of American students are studying in the Caribbean. Medical Schools in the European Union are comparatively much affordable than their American and Caribbean counterparts.

2. Check the admission requirements

Students may need either an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree in order to gain admission to a medical school in the Caribbean. At times students are encouraged to have MCAT scores in order to get admission into Caribbean medical schools.

Admissions to Caribbean medical schools are quite easy in comparison to their American counterparts. The tuition fees are affordable and Caribbean islands have a physical terrain that brings a sense of adventure to a person’s mind.

However, in the European Union; students are only required to have a high school diploma and pass the admissions exam. Students are evaluated during their studies so as to see whether they should be offered an equal opportunity if needed.

3. Life in the Caribbean can be difficult

Life in the Caribbean sounds tempting and exciting. Beaches, the sun, and exotic surroundings draw visitors from around the world. But, in the perspective of a student; living and studying medicine in the Caribbean is not like a vacation.

Island life can get difficult after a while due to lack of presence of gyms, movie theaters, bars, and other recreational facilities.

Medical schools in Europe have facilities such as gyms, movie theaters, bars, and other recreational facilities. We should keep in mind that nightlife in Europe is not as vibrant as that of the Caribbean.

4. Check for the School’s and Program’s Accreditation

European medical universities are accredited and have a long prestigious history of being reputable and bringing the best in the market. Students from these Universities returning to the USA do really well and obtain residency after passing their US MLEs.

Likewise, there are medical schools in the Caribbean which are not only accredited but also have a good reputable history too. A small amount of schools is however not as good as their American and European counterparts, but there is a considerable amount of medical schools in the Caribbean nations which are reputed and accredited.

Why are students tempted to study medicine in the Caribbean?

Admissions in Caribbean universities are easy, the tuition fees are affordable and the Caribbean islands bring to the mind a sense of adventure, excitement, ease, and comfort. The admission process of Caribbean medical schools is replicating the American pattern, requiring a pre-med course load, an associate’s or bachelor’s degree and at times, MCAT scores.

Though tuition fees for some are rising, there are some medical schools in the Caribbean whose fees are affordable and their programs are reputable. Graduates and students alike from medical universities in the Caribbean are able to demonstrate excellent academic and clinical performances.

Apart from all that, students who intend to train themselves in the Caribbean not only get to look at issues from a whole new perspective but also receive enriched training and diversity which is unique to the region.

Among the best Caribbean medical school is the Windsor University School of medicine. Located in St Kitts and Nevis, the school is accredited by a large number of regional and global bodies of repute and offers some of the best programs any medical school in the Caribbean has to offer.
